Youth Programs & Services

Ability Connection has been helping Adults with disabilities since 1953 with programs and services to support families of anyone 18+ with physical or intellectual disabilities. But mid-2021, noticing a need in Dallas County among children in North Texas. Ability Connection’s Youth Programs and Services provides a safe and fun environment for tweens and teens with disabilities during holiday breaks, summer, and on the weekends.

Natasha Sankey

MHMR of Tarrant County

Natasha is a mother of six. She has only lived in Texas for a few years, but loves the amount of resources that are offered here in North Texas. She is excited to share her perspective as a parent of a neurodivergent child as well as a child with a chronic health condition. She is a certified community health worker and working on her Bachelor's degree in social work.

Natasha Sankey serves as the Co Community Events Coordinator for the Help Me Grow/Help Me Thrive Family

Advisory Council. Natasha is also a Certified Family Partner for MHMR of Tarrant County during the day. Natasha is involved in The American Red Cross as a Blood Drive host and enjoys organizing events.


Patricia Burns

Associate Judge

Probate Court No. 2

Patricia Burns is the newly appointed associate judge of Probate Court No. 2 in Tarrant County, Texas. She has received her JD for Texas Wesleyan School of Law, now known as Texas A&M School of Law in 2000. For 24 years, Judge Burns’ has assisted thousands of families in the area of guardianship, probate, mental health and CPS law. She has her certification in mediation and attended LSU for her undergraduate degree. Previously she served on the Texas Guardianship Association, and received recognized as a Top Attorney, and received the Great Women of Texas Award, Legacy of Women Award, and Woman of Influence Award.

Camp Summit

Camp Summit is a sleep-away camp for adults and children with disabilities located in Paradise, TX. Our campers may be physically challenged, developmentally delayed, dual-sensory impaired, or have multiple disabilities. We welcome all campers, regardless of the severity of their disabilities. As long as we can medically meet their needs, they are welcome at camp. With our on-site medical staff and updated nursing facilities, you can rest assured your camper will be in good hands.

Stephanie has worked with MHMR for over 20 years. Her biggest joy is being able to come along beside families to educate, and empower families, regarding needed services and supports. Her specialty is helping families to know their rights when it comes to services and to ensure families are receiving good quality of care. Being a parent of a Special Needs adult son and a wife of a Gulf War Veteran, has been her greatest teacher in life and has prepared her for the services she provides to families. She is a graduate of Arlington Baptist University and a Certified Family Partner, with Health & Human Services 2022. Stephanie is a firm believer in life, never tell anyone you know how they feel, unless you have had the same experiences in life.

Puzzles DFW

Puzzles is a year-round training facility in Irving, TX for young adults with special needs. In addition to their adult program, they provide a Camp Style summer program during school breaks. Puzzles provides participants with small group, individualized care based on their specific needs.

The Self-Determination Group

The Arc, DFW Area

Established in 2014, The Self-Determination Group is a cross disability group run by and for individuals with disabilities (“PWD”). They serve to educate, advocate for, and support the concept of self-determination, and take actions that promote the human rights & inclusion of PWD. They serve the counties of Collin, Dallas, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.

Life Planning For Families of Special Needs

Thomas P. Kroehle, Jr., TJ as he is known, is an independent life planner, who works with families with special needs. He understands the importance of developing a strategic, long-term life plan that takes into consideration their very unique circumstances. His philosophy centers on the cornerstone of the strength of the family unit.

TJ helps clients understand their need to develop the appropriate wills and trusts. He helps them see the need for a "Letter of Intent" which defines their special needs person's hopes, dreams and desires through a lifetime strategy. He is knowledgeable in government programs that aid special needs families, and he coaches families in how to obtain government aid, such as SSI. More importantly he helps the family understand how to maintain those government programs throughout their loved one's lifetime.

About IDD

IDD is used to describe any life-long disability attributable to mental and/or ​physical impairments that are diagnosed before the age of 18 (intellectual ​disabilities) or age 22 (developmental disabilities). IDD affect daily ​functioning in two or more of the following areas: capacity for independent ​living, economic self-sufficiency, learning, mobility, receptive and expressive ​language, self-care and self-direction. IDD includes such diagnoses as ​Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum

Disorder, and Down Syndrome. Individuals can have symptoms that range ​from mild to severe.
